If I try to use something like Smart Photo Fix, or anything where there are settings to tweak, the split screen window comes up full screen and in what looks like the 'photo' interface (I use full) but there's an immediate error chime that rolls about three or four 'dings' and the buttons don't populate nor does the 'preview' window load. In fact, both loading the program and the effects I've applied this way work well. If I use something that's automatic, like Instant Photo Fix or Instant Noise Removal, everything works as expected. I installed both 32 and 64 bit versions (the recommendation) and this happens in both versions. I just downloaded PaintShop Pro last week, and this weekend have been poking around to see if it's a keeper or not.
